A LOVE STORY: AN EXCERPT

A/N: for a longing heart....

A LOVE STORY: AN EXCERPT

I

I was part of a story—a love story that is. I fell in love with the nicest lady who was married to the kindest man. She’s not beautiful but just too perfect for the face I’ve carved for gazing.

She hated drinking red wine but she drinks so often. I asked her once why despite detesting its taste she still savors every drop of it; she just said that she has no choice but to drink something that she doesn’t like.

She is like a child, always craving for chocolates. Her face would light up whenever she receives a box of it. The kindest man let her indulge on the things she loved the most, but there was something in her eyes when she put a piece on her tongue that she took from the plainly wrapped one I brought for her.

Interesting… I always thought that I have tasted the best chocolate ever made. Still these are really heaven on earth.”

I did not quite understand her. She speaks in poetry, her language are something vague and mysterious. But I understand clearly that chocolate is the only thing she loves that she can have.

She has a pair of laughing eyes but the saddest when it stares at the farthest end of the sea by the lanai of their beach house. She smiled a lot, always seeing something beautiful in everything—even on the smallest creature there is.

She once spotted a lady bug and laughed out loud when a spark of playful humor entered her mind, “poor little lady bug, to be called a lady when no gentleman could ever love it because the poor thing is a he…”

She was the worst dancer but justifiably compensated this through making everybody laugh at her jester-like manners while saying, “oh come on you guys… nobody does it better than me!”

Still she tried her best not to step on any of my feet as we glided through the dreamy voice of Sinatra as he took the notes of, “…when the world is cold, I would feel the glow just thinking of you…”

No less than a dancer but far worst as a singer, she repeatedly tumbled at the lines she loved to sing, “… and in the middle of the colored curtain I started to cry…”

She’s the best liar I’ve known. Everything in her knows how to deceive and she handles herself very well. I asked her once if she really love her husband and she just smiled— the kind that a man would think too lucky to be loved by this girl. And after that smile, she giggled and looked into my eyes as if trying to figure out if its really dark brown.

Silly, silly! Why? He gives me every reason to love him,” she said convincingly but made me wonder if it was a drop coming from her eyes or just a part of the splashing waves.

We walked at the beach one afternoon after I’ve seen the saddest part of her. She told me a story about the time when she was just a ‘lil lassy.’

All the girls were scurrying about this boy, everyone was giggling and laughing when he said something— maybe something funny— I was just at a corner watching them but I really wanted to be near him…” her eyes glistened as if that person she is talking about is beside her.

I asked why she held back.

But how?” her eyes glowed and resembled a perfect acorn shape as her pearl set of teeth smiled at me.

Then she showed me her empty fingers and beamed with a different kind of grin— somewhat melancholic.

See? He gave me back my freedom…” then her eyes revealed what she tried to hide. “He asked me for the ring I wore for five years, so I gave it to him and he took his. Did you know what happened next?” she looked pensively at me.

You don’t,” she whispered, “he threw it out of the window— into the sea. But I did not stop him…”

I was stricken by what she said. She looked so sad but elegantly wonderful.

He said that he cannot give me the happiness I dreamed of because he was not—“ she stopped and continued walking, “please, when you come to visit again, can you bring me that chocolate?”

I nodded and left her by the shore. I did not look back.

II

I came back the next day. The familiar house welcomed me but only her fragrance was the remnant of her presence. I left the box by the side table and wondered how long it will stay there… untouched.

III

I spotted her by the empty space of the lounge in one of the busiest side of Buenos Aires. “I thought you hated red wine?” I took the seat across her as her eyes danced in glee to see me there.

Well, I learned to love something I hate the most.”

There she started again with another verse.

I’ve tried bloody mary and I liked it. It tasted pain,” she playfully batted her lashes, “when I was a little girl I loved singing the nursery rhyme that goes something like, ‘Mary, Mary quite contrary…”

She laughed out loud with the familiar tingle way back before, “do you know that bloody mary and that song have something in common?”

Really?” I felt like talking to a little girl.

They were created in memory of Mary Queen of Scotland. They cut her head off because she was ‘quite contrary’” she lilted then she looked serious, “and the wine resembled the blood…”

Gross…” I managed to smile.

Yes, gross!” she made face and once again sat straight, “I’ve read somewhere that she was beheaded because she fell in love with the wrong man…”

Then we are lucky to live in the world where we don’t have to be beheaded for falling in love with the wrong person,” I blurted out without even thinking.

Yes, lucky indeed… but we are prompted to behead ourselves.”

I always wonder if ever there would come a time that I would understand her.

Did you ever think of beheading yourself?” I teased.

Are you asking me if I fell in love with the wrong person?” she looked straight into my eyes then diverted her gaze towards the open window behind me. She looked so serene, “I asked you to come here for this little secret… after this, I will leave again. Somewhere far… somewhere I am hoping someone would find me…”

She handed me a perfectly folded pink paper and smiled, “please read it as soon as I step out of that open door…”

She stood and glided away…

You,

I want to fall in love with you all over again, the very same way I did when I first saw you in that little nook by the park in front of the fountain as you gently caressed the strings of your guitar. I can still clearly remember the simple curve on your lips as if you were thinking of some mischief to do and your eyes— they seemed to tell a secret as you focused on your instrument. I was sitting there— a few meters away from you, trying to catch your every move and dreaming… putting a spell on you to look into my direction. And the funny thing is you did look at me! Do you remember that? I almost fell out of my seat …

You were around pretty girls most of the time and they said that you were a perfect gentleman— well, for me you a perfect charmer! The way those girls giggled when you whispered in their ears gave me a mixed feeling of jealousy and regret… jealousy because of the attention you gave them and regret that I did not have the courage to be like them – taking the chance to be near you. I know that it was just a silly daydreaming and the hopeless-romantic-little-me could not contain my secret smile whenever you passed me by.

But that was all I ever stayed... a silent fan who wished for you to sing her favorite songs – the one she listened to every night before she falls to sleep.

Years passed… so many things happened… I managed to survive keeping those secret longings inside my dreams; and you – you continued to exist in my own world although you left our little to town to chase your dreams. I clung to your memories when you left… that little nook, the sight of guitars, the balcony of your house where you used to sit staring deep into nothingness, the songs you used to sing, the tunes you used to whistle, the girls who came scurrying over you and even the sky… they would always bring you to me.

Do you know that I was even counting the years when I last saw you? Funny as it seemed, I was like a faithful girl awaiting for her lover’s return. There were other boys who seemed to hold my attention but none of them can ever reflect the sparkle in your eyes or the sound of your voice or the smile on your lips or your simple gesture of hellos that were the highlights of my days before.

The waiting was taking so long that I suddenly realized that my feelings slowly drifted into an abyss that beholds you. My every second thoughts of you turned into minutes, then hours, then days, then weeks, then months… until years passed… they said that out of sight, out of mind…

My life went on… I celebrated my success, endured my failures, said goodbyes to friends who have left and exchanging e-mails with them now and then, met new acquaintances, grieved for the loss of loved ones, welcomed new life, cried for my mistakes, left my stressful work, searched for greener pasture… and the funny thing is I let love in my life in somebody else’s eyes…

Did my heart finally forget you?

It’s kinda different for me to discuss this thing to you as we managed to be back in each other’s lives without knowing what we meant for each other before…

I don’t know how to end this letter or if there will ever be an ending to this… but I am still hoping, and praying that once again you would find me…

Me

IV

My heart was throbbing with the speed I’m not so sure of. I was running too fast… catching every face in the crowd… I tried to find her on every dark alleys and corners of Buenos Aires. She is a puzzle I will go on figuring how to solve and she gave me another challenge to take. If I see her again would she still be the same woman with melancholic eyes and bittersweet smile I talked to just a few minutes ago? I have to find her… and then what?

I stopped in the middle of an old piazza as the heat blazed upon my skin… in front of me is an old little fountain… it doesn’t matter anymore. My heart smiled. I know where to find her.

V

The figure in front of me is like an apparition. She was sitting a few meters away from me… facing the fountain. She looks just like before— the girl who has became an object of my curiosity. She would always sit there looking away… as if waiting for someone. Is she waiting right now?

For me?

I walked over to where she could see me. She looked up to me and I sat down beside her with only an inch that separates us.

You’re 27 hours, 18 minutes and 9 seconds late…” she started without taking her eyes off the display of water and lights, “were you looking in all the wrong places again?”

DEWDROPS OF SUNSHINE

here's another yuri-taeyang shot... idk, kinda loving this pairing... should I write some more???? hehe

DEWDROPS OF SUNSHINE

She laid the teaspoon on the saucer and lifted the cup of coffee to her lips. She cursed when she realized how cold it was. She has been unconscious for the past thirty minutes she sat in the coffee shop. She hated waking up so early in the morning just to be stood up again. Her eyes fell on the brown envelope beside her cup.

He phoned last night saying he only got a few hours to spare for the meeting. Finally, she told herself. She did not care to ask where he would be flying again for it doesn’t interest her anymore. They have drawn the line for almost a year now and finally she decided to make it formal.

He was nowhere to be found most of the time— running here and there. Not that she was chasing him but she has to make him stop for that short time and give her something she wanted. She took the documents out of the envelope and reread the contents. She sighed heavily as she traced her own signature on that piece of paper that would change their whole lives.

It took her five days and a half to lay a hand on that paper and he, on the other hand, five… five stupid months.

Glancing on the shop’s clock again, she muttered with disgust. He has been keeping her waiting for her entire life and even now. She hated him so much that she could not wait to cut the last cord that binds them together. She counted one to ten, if he doesn’t show up she will leave.

One… two… three… four… five… six… seven… eight… nine… ten…

She shut her eyes tight and swallowed hard, damn him. She finished her second cup after pushing aside the cold one. Her neck started to ache on her constant turning whenever the chime attached to the door would make that annoying clanging. She gathered her courage and stood.

The door opened unexpectedly and she stood staring at the man in front of her breathing hard.

You wouldn’t want to know what I went through just to make it here.”

You wouldn’t wanna know what I went through waiting for you…” she walked past him brushing her shoulder to his.

Yuri-ah—“ the familiarity of that tone almost knocked her off her feet.

Dong Taeyang… I want to get through this as soon as possible,” she said stiffly then sat down on the nearest seat, “these are the documents.”

He remained standing as she focused on the envelope, “what? I thought you only have—“

My flight got canceled. Let’s take a walk first,” he said calmly and walked away leaving her staring at his back and listening to the clanging door.

She stood and walked with the kind of cadence that can never equal that of her racing heart when she saw his face again… the face she dreamed of just last night. She found him standing on the other side of the road, hands on his trench coat, with a broad smile as if he is too eager of why they were there.

I don’t—“

He took her hand much to her surprise and whistled as he walked, “haven’t been here for a long while… somehow nothing changed.”

His hand has that same warmth that held hers for years as they glided on the same street but she knows it was all so different from before. She kept up with him as she tried hard to free her hand from his but he seemed to be unwilling to let go.

You still have this little hand,” he smiled without looking at her as she searched his face with answers, “it still fits perfectly into mine.”

She managed to slip her hand off his or did he just loosen his grip? He stopped walking and rested his weight on the railings facing the park, “is there someone new?”

What are you talking about?” she stood behind him and realized that she has been holding the envelope with so much force that it has creases on the edges.

When I received the call from your lawyer that was the only thing I could think of.”

No… there’s no one…” she stood beside him and looked on the same direction as he does.

I chose to go away to give you space...”

Tae—“

I left because you said you could not breathe anymore— that I was suffocating you.”

He still remembered what she has long forgotten.

I left because I could no longer forgive myself for causing you so much pain,” he looked at her and smiled helplessly, “I will sign that paper because you want me to, not because I want to…”

Are you putting the blame on me?” she hated the way he would talk to her like that. She hated herself for suddenly forgetting why they ended up like that. What did he do before? Did she really tell him those words before?

I did not fly all the way here for another spitting bout,” he pinched her nose then he looked at his watch, “hmmmm… let me see, I still have 3 hours…”

You’re always good at that. All this time you are running your life with that stupid watch on your wrist. All my life I am just waiting stupidly for you to spare me what is left of your time.”

He smiled and raised his hand but suddenly withdrew, “why do I suddenly feel confused, Yuri-ah?”

Because you are stupid!” she raised her voice a little higher and doesn’t care anymore if she would end up crumpling the papers, “you are stupid not knowing you are the air I breathe and being without you is killing me!”

He stood dumbfounded as if he lost his tongue.

And now you came back and spared me this little time to breathe again and you will go back killing me! Don’t you know I managed to get on for one year without breathing? And now here you are in front of me making me breathe once more just to suffocate me again?”

A smile slowly formed on his lips as her voice wobbled with the breeze, “Yuri-ah, listen—“

No! You listen! Sign this damn paper right now or you’ll regret it for the rest of your life!” she shoved the document on his chest.

Is this what you really want?” he took out the papers and took out a pen and signed it in front of her.

What did she expect? For him to tear the documents? He is the most infuriating person she knows as he carefully straightened the crumpled paper, “here’s your freedom Kwon Yuri.”

Then he turned and started walking away from her, “no…” she managed to say with bowed head, “no… this is not what I want… I want you, you stupid jerk…”

He stopped dead on his track.

If not for this stupid divorce would you come back to me? I just wanted to see you… you asshole…” she murmured under her breathe but he was right in front of her to hear everything she uttered then she spat on his face, “ya! Go back to hell where you belong!”

She turned to the other direction and sprinted. She stopped and turned to see him standing still, “Pabooyah! Are you going to stand there and watch your life walk away from you?! Why are you such a hard person?!”

He scratched his head and bit his lower lip then weakly smiled at her, “do you know why it’s okay for me to divorce you now? It’s because I would be taking a second chance with you… with a clean sheet… but you are such an impatient bitch, Yuri-ssi.”

She could feel the late spring wind brushing on her cheeks as the fresh sunshine that heats up her skin kissed the remaining dewdrops of the rain last night. He put his arms around her shoulder and pinched her cheek once again, “Ouch! Damn you! Do that again, Dong Tae Yang, and I’ll give this stupid document to my lawyer!”

A TIME FOR US

I

We were two lonely souls who tried to drift away from the superficial existence of life. We wanted something new… something exciting… something other people would want to have but too wrong for the kind of strict society we are living. We became lovers.

From the outside we were just mere acquaintances in the same circle of friends. We went to the same bar, we talked to the same people, and we eat the same food. But behind those we were lovers. I slept with him. He slept with me.

It was crazy, but so beautiful. We are each others relief. The get-away we always wanted to have. No commitments, no strings attached but no sleeping with others while we were on that kind of escapade. If the other wanted or needed it, we will be there for each other. Satisfying and amazingly gratifying. It was what we wanted.

We were friends more than lovers.

But we were the type who won’t be kept in the same situation for a long time. Many times I thought that we would eventually separate but our separation was more painful for me. He called me up in the middle of a business meeting saying he needs to have dinner with me.

Are you sure you’re buying me dinner?” I smiled despite the pounding of my chest. It was a rare occasion.

Of course!” he smiled as he took my hand and rested it on his lap, “I want to treat my favorite woman dinner.”

I don’t like that tone,” I pulled my hands away.

I met this wonderful girl,” he finally said as I just stared into his eyes, “I’m marrying her.”

I laughed. “I thought I was the only wonderful girl in this world?!”

Yes, you are but…” I could tell that he was sweating.

Arasso, Oppa… I’m so happy for you,” honestly I was not feeling anything at all upon hearing it as I took his hands and give it a gentle squeeze, “so when are you planning to kill yourself and offer your naked self to this other ‘wonderful’ woman?”

I’ll propose first…” he took my hand and placed them on his cheek, “you will be okay, right?”

Of course, I will be okay!” I gave him a little slap, “silly… what do you think I will do? Cry my eyes out for you?”

He laughed, “not really, I mean…”

You’re not worth it…” I giggled then kissed him on the lips, “but I’m gonna miss playing with you.”

Me too…” he said apologetically, “find a good man for yourself, someone who would love you.”

I sure would,” I smiled, suddenly my heart was tearing.

My place or your place…?” he finally said.

Farewell trip?” I laughed, “yours, I would definitely miss it…”

We spent the whole night with each other. Like it was our first but it was definitely the last. I kissed him the way I would want to and explored him since it would be the last time to touch him that way thinking that soon he would be other woman’s.

we were as one babe
for a moment in time
and it seemed everlasting
that you would always be mine
now you want to be free
so I'm letting you fly

The next day, I pulled away from his embrace because the time was up—the same set up… before dawn comes. But he pulled me close to him again, “no not yet. Stay with me for today. Just today.”

But…”

Please. Just let me hold you and touch you…” he snuggled closer to my bosom, “can you sing for me again?”

I smiled and hummed the tune that would usually lull him to sleep. I know we were losing each other but it was something beyond our control. We needed to move on. Find someone else. Find someone new. The way we found each other.

i ain't gonna cry no
and i won't beg you to stay
if you're determined to leave boy
i will not stand in your way

We barely left the bed that day but we did not make love anymore. Just holding each other. It was better that way. The kind of farewell I would want myself. I took my phone and read the message. I slowly gathered myself and watch him in his sleep, it was way past six in the evening. It was time. I had to let him go.

II

I did not wake you up because I hate to cut the beautiful dream you’re having. I have to go. My mom sent me message, she’s in Seoul and arranged a dinner with me already. I guess it’s about dad again. Anyways, I’ll just tell you how it went when we see each other with the gang. Thank you for last night and today and the rest of the moments with you. I will miss my baby boy… be happy, stupid jerk… :)

She left that night with the note placed on my dining table with my dinner. She was always like that. Before she would leave in the morning, she would make breakfast first.

I saw her again at a friend’s party after a few days. Her parents begged her to go back to Jejudu where they live. She has this clash with them for a couple of years so she decided to live in Seoul by herself. She was a rebel of a daughter. Someone who doesn’t want to be tied down, fenced up and choked. She is freedom. She was my perfect adventure.

When I told her about my decision, I did not see any pain in her eyes… just the shallow depth I would always see in her. So she took it as it was. Maybe I wasn’t able to get into her heart like I wanted to before, it was so easy for her to let me go. I had it badly but I did not show. That was the way it should be. We set the rules—nobody should fall in love.

Well excuse me while I get killed softly,
Heart slows down and I can hardly tell you I'm okay
At least 'til yesterday,
You know you got me off my highest guard,
Believe me when I say it's hard.
We'll get through this tonight
And I know one day you and I will be free

We were mere acquaintance when we decided that crazy set up. I agreed because I had nothing to lose. She is so attractive to be resisted so we played each others game and became secret lovers. Nobody knew about us in our circle but I reckoned her bestfriend knew because she was always that sour on me. I did not mind. She made her choice.

It was an exciting adventure. But it was not all that we do. She became my refuge on my bitter days and I became her quiet teddy bear (as she puts it) when she wants to pour out her anger to the world and to her life.

And I was trying to disappear,
But you got me wrapped around you
I can hardly breathe without you
I was trying to disappear
But I got lost in your eyes now,
You brought me down to size now.

So you will be living in Jejudu?” I said on her ear since the music was so loud, oh how I missed her scent, “when are you leaving?”

In three days time,” she leaned back on me, “and we will be flying to New Zealand after a week.”

“What?” yes, I heard her right but I just could not believe it, “why?”

My dad’s specialist lives there and they have better equipment so we need to be there,” she said nonchalantly without realizing how her news tore me.

So you will be farther away from me…” I tried hard to smile.

Silly boy…” she was about to touch my face but she withdrew. I was with my fiancé.

You won’t be here for the wedding,” I smiled weakly at the other girl on my opposite side.

I’m afraid not,” she pouted then looked at future wife then, “are you sure you’re marrying this jerk? You don’t know what trouble you’re getting into!”

It was a joke as we all laughed. Then I turned to her seriously and hoped she felt how I felt, “until when are you going to be there…”

The doctor said for a long time…” there was a glint of sadness in her eyes that I wanted to crush her into me that moment but I can’t. If I had it my way I would have asked her for her farewell trip again just to hold her close to me. But we drew our line.

She was leaving… finally leaving.

III

I held my baby boy who was sleeping the whole flight and kissed his pinky cheek. He will be turning three. It was almost three years since I left and the homecoming was bittersweet. I was stressed out thinking that I could not fly to Jejudu right away. Seoul is not a place for me. Especially for my baby. Too many memories hang above me… too many people I would eventually bump into… too many faces I should be staying away from.

I sat across my bestfriend and beside my mother who was clutching my hyperactive angel. His little hands want to touch everything he laid his pretty eyes on and I’m having my headaches hushing and scolding him on the restaurant. My bestfriend laughed as she sees that side of me. I am a mother now.

By heaven’s grace, the little one yawned as I kissed his wet lips and laid my lips on his eyes to finally bring him to his slumber. I closed my eyes myself and inhaled his scent. As I opened my eyes, it fell on a pair of deep brown eyes at around five tables away from us. He was watching us closely. My heart shuddered. I panicked. Logic turned over so I dialed my phone, “In Ho, where are you? Oh okay… pick us up. Yong Bae is sleeping already. Okay.”

Minutes later, my brother arrived and took my baby off my arms. It was better that way. He knows that I have a brother which he hasn’t meet yet. It was perfect. At least I have no one to explain my baby’s existence.

I walked ahead of them because I could still feel his stare. I was hoping he got the message. I am married too… just like him. I just hope he would believe that lie.

You saw him, didn’t you?” Sica tugged me when I was about to enter the car, “I forgot to tell… he did not get married…”

He did not get married. Her voice rang on my ears. It was all crazy. Why? All I could do is ask as the car moved and I watched my little boy snuggling on my mother’s breast. Why didn’t he got married when he was supposed to?

I laid myself beside my baby and listened to his rhythmic breathing. He has his daddy’s eyes that I loved to gaze into. He has his daddy’s pair of lips that I loved to munch up before. I smiled as I kissed his tiny lips. But you have mommy’s ears and mommy’s neck that daddy loved to nibble on before. I felt silly thinking about it. I traced his T zone remembering the way I did with his father. Now I wanted to see him. I have to keep my pregnancy from him since it was one of the rules and since I found out about it when he broke the news of his impending marriage. Besides, I had Yong Bae with the same thought of not ever going to tell his father. He is the fruit of my love for him.

I know it was crazy but I found myself in front of the place where I shared memories with him or the place where we might have made my little angel. I felt silly as I pushed the password for his door—the numbers that represented our names. He might have sold the place for all I know, but the reason why I was there was still vague for me.

To my surprise, it opened. I took a heave before entering. It was dark and I know where the switch was located but I did not bother to open the lights—the way I did before when I sneaked there. I smiled because everything was on its proper place… not a furniture was moved and everything seemed to be well-kept. He was still living there and what I was doing there was a big risk. I went to his room and sat on his bed. Everything smelled him.

I laid myself on his bed—our bed. It feels the same. It’s softness and his scent was buried on it. I recalled how I would be there knowing he was still at work… taking my shower on his bathroom and leaving my clothes on the floor. I would lay myself on that very bed with nothing but his quilt covering my freezing body. I would wake up with his kisses and caresses and he would lay himself beside me snuggling me close to his heated body with all his clothes on and me…

I admitted to myself that I had fallen in love with him for the longest time but I did not dwell on the feelings fearing he might just turn me down. It was better that way… just as long as I could be with him. I closed my eyes and imagined waiting for him just like before but I couldn’t sleep… I shouldn’t sleep there anymore…

When he said that he was getting married, it took three days for it to sink in. I was denying that it was happening but it was in front of me so I faced it. He wasn’t in love with me. That was all I needed to know. And now he did not get married, what was I suppose to do? It was just a wishful thinking that I was the reason why.

Now the memories flooded again, the way he would trace every inch of my skin and explored my deepest secret as a woman. He molded me. He made me. He created me. He brought me the kind of life I never regretted I had. I was his and he was mine on that place and time.

What could have happened if I did not leave? If we meet again now, would he think that Yong Bae is his? All those times we danced in that kind of relationship with me wondering if I stayed just his lover—a toy to play with. I may be brave but I never had the courage to tell him how I felt and what I meant to him. Who knows there is another woman using that bed with him now and I am an unwelcomed guest.

My lids became so heavy…

I must leave…

He might be home any moment…

My eyes gave in…

IV

My eyes could not believe what they were seeing. She was like an apparition… an oasis in that surge of people around me. She still looks the same but so much different. A mixture of this and that. An assortment of my past and my present and my dream. It was her… my eyes were not purging me because her bestfriend was there too. I was having goosebumps as the voice of the businessman I was talking with seemed to be some kind of incomprehensible murmurs.

Her face was a panorama of feelings as she dealt with the little boy taking her full attention. She would laugh as he would make faces at them. Frown when he tried to reach out something on the table. Smile when he would kiss her. Pout when he would playfully hit her face. Could he be hers? He must be hers by the way she would kiss him. Then the little fellow seemed to have fallen asleep in my woman’s arms. The little boy was her baby. Our eyes met. It was she who looked away… maybe she did not recognize me since it was just a passing glance.

Moments later, a man walked towards them and kissed my woman’s forehead and the older woman beside her. He took the baby in his arms and they walked away. Her friend saw me and I waved just to let her acknowledge my presence.

So she has married. She has gotten over me so soon as her son seemed to be almost three. I wanted to run to her and ask her if she still remembered me so I fought with my mind over the idea. Suddenly I found myself outside yanking her friend’s hand when she was about to ride her car. My woman was no where in sight.

Tae Yang Oppa!” she said in a false surprise.

Hey…” I ran my fingers on my hair, “it was Yuri.”

Yeah…” she smiled weakly.

Can you give me her number?” my mind was racing and it was the only thing I could think of that time.

Hmmm…” she mumbled for a minute, “I don’t know, but can I just give her your number and I’ll tell her to call you instead? It’s not appropriate for me to be giving someone else’s number.”

She took my number, “please give it to her…” I called as she entered her car. I sounded desperate but I didn’t care.

I went back to my office and my heart ached thinking of her. Reminiscing the way I held her in my arms and got drowned on her presence. She was more than my lover, someone like a soulmate. Someone who became an obsession. We committed ourselves on that kind of play that started out as a safe ground but I slowly fell into her knowing that she was the one who set the rules and I was her mere subject.

She got me around her fingers. We loved playing games especially during our out-of-town trips— our little get-away from the world where we played newly weds on our honeymoon. I will never forget the way I signed her name as my wife during our trips to her doctor.

It was useless for me being in the office with nothing but her memories to keep me company. It was time to go home in that lonely abode I shared with her before. Another passing day of reminiscing. But it’s better today. I was closer to her than I ever had after almost three years. I clasped my phone on my hand wishing her friend really gave my number to her and any moment she would be calling me.

What does it make her to call her old lover while her husband is with her?

Then it was a blind hope. I shouldn’t kill myself with that kind of false assumption.

I pressed the password of my pad and stopped realizing I hadn’t changed it for a long time. Then continued without deciding what to do with it.

The house was in dire silence again, the way it should be. I went to the mini bar and poured myself some wine. Was it a wrong decision to cancel my wedding just because I was in love with my lover who happened to have no feelings for me after all? Am I just wasting my life letting her memory overpower me as I live in this solitary life? Now that I know she has moved on with her life, when should I start moving on?

I slumped on the couch thinking of the past. I would usually walk inside my room and go straight to the bathroom only to find her clothes lying on the floor. I had to pick them up one by one and fold them in a neat pile then stock on the dresser. And my woman would be lying on my bed curled into my sheets with her hair still damp.

You’re home,” she would usually say.

Yeah,”

Why just now?” she said in a sleep-stricken angry whisper.

Boys night out.”

No girls?” she would mumble in a sleepy tone.

No girls.”

Really?” she was nosy even being half-asleep.

I swear, no girls.”

Good. Come here,” my slave-driver would command as I would hold her close to me with all my clothes on and her…

When I finished the last drop, I decided to go to bed with an empty stomach. I walked towards the bathroom and glanced at the empty floor. What was I expecting to see there? Or it has become a habit?

V

He noticed something on his bed. Did he make it that morning? He turned on the dim light above the headboard and realized that there was something— someone inside his sheets, then he mumbled to himself, “Darn it! I’m going crazy.”

He sat beside it and slowly lifted the covers. A surprise it was. He wanted to touch her face just to make sure that he hasn’t gone crazy yet. But he was afraid that the beautiful image might burst like a bubble if he touches her. She sleeps so soundly with a constant steering and making sexy sounds he remembered from long ago. It couldn’t be a dream because he was so much awake and a quarter of wine doesn’t make him drunk. Maybe it was his hunger.

He watched her closely, examining her facial features as if it was his first time seeing her face. She still has that sleepy chinky eyes that would dance when she laughs or smile. Her cheeks, although he remembered that she has that supple cheeks before, now it has become somewhat leaner. Her lips, full as ever. He just missed seeing it form a smile.

He lifted the cover some more to expose her shoulders. She was wearing a white polo shirt which was somehow found its way to be unbuttoned in an accidentally sinful way. What could she be doing in his house? Much less on his bed?

He could not help himself anymore as he brushed some wandering strands off her face. She stirred. He stopped dead… probably waiting for her to wake up.

She slowly opened her eyes then sat up when she realized where she was.

Hey…” she heard him uttered weakly, “what are you doing here?”

Darn It! I fell asleep,” she gathered herself up and tried to adjust her eyes on the teeny bit of brightness of the room, “yeah, what on earth am I doing here?”

He chuckled as he watched her stand and seemed to be disoriented.

Oh, I need to go. I’m so sorry,” she said as she looked around for her bag that was resting on the side table beside where he was sitting, “I’m sorry I didn’t mean to barge in here like this…”

It’s okay—oops! Be careful…” he said then rushed to her side when she bumped on his working table, “are you okay?”

Yes, thank you…” she felt crazily stupid that time that all she wanted was to fade away especially when he brushed his hands on her arms, “I should really be going…”

No,” he ordered as she continued to move in a clumsy motion, “sit here. You’re not okay.”

Yeah, I’m dizzy,” she smiled weakly as she sat on the bed again.

When did you arrive?”

Just this morning…” she said without looking at him.

Let me get you something hot to drink…” we stood then looked back at her, “don’t move a muscle.”

When he was out of sight, she buried her face on her hand scolding herself for being so crazy but she could not do anything. She was already there. What’s next? Should I move a muscle?

He smiled to himself as he fixed her milk. He turned and found her standing behind him clutching her belongings on her chest as if someone was threatening to steal it from her.

I can’t stay.”

You’re husband is waiting for you?”

My son is waiting for me.”

So are you planning to get a divorce?”

I never thought of that.”

I did not get married.”

So I’ve heard.”

Will you stay for a while?”

I should—“

Drink this first.”

Yes, thank you.”

Back for good?”

Guess so…”

I want to meet your son.”

Why didn’t you get married?”

Because…”

Okay…”

Do you still cook?”

My cooking still tastes bland.”

I don’t mind at all.”

Really?”

Yeah…”

You still live alone?”

Where’s your wedding ring?”

I haven’t got one.”

Then he is mine?”

I guess so… perhaps…”

What is his name?”

Yong Bae.”

After my name?”

Yeah…”

Will you marry me?”

Will I?”

AFFAIR

I

I slowly pushed the door open and was about to grope for the switch when I realized that it won’t matter, I withdrew my hand—I know my way inside that place even in darkness. Slipping my stilettos off and kicking them on the floor, I massaged my temples and slumped on the nearest corner I managed to fall unto. There was a wave of placid air that enveloped me, maybe it’s because the place is my sanctuary.

Just a few days after I arrived, I did a major refurbish of the whole floor, partly to get rid of the five-year unwanted tenants that took my place when I left and partly to purge the memories it holds. I did a great job on the first motive; the second one is still in question.

I closed my eyes and the scenes flashed into my memory. The great ballroom, the display of lights, the overflowing wine, the gorgeous gowns, the dazzling jewelries… orchestrations. Like in a fairytale. I have been in most of those charades for the past five years so it was another same old same. But it was totally different. Totally beyond those I danced my way before.

I remember those eyes—searching, asking, and begging. But there were anger, frustration and jealousy. I can read those pools the very same way I read them before… because those mirrors were and are meant only to look at me.

After a few minutes of empty contemplations, I gathered myself up and went straight to the bathroom. The image that stared back at me looked the same but almost different… five years of trying. The black chiffon faux-wrap dress was in contrast with the blush pink—almost white wall. The garnet chandelier earrings hang loosely and complemented the pale flushed visage. The lost strands wandered on each side. The bare neck was stripped with the lush diamond teardrop necklace. The redden skin… the fading colors… the tear-smudged eyes…

I don’t know her—I don’t know that person that stares blindly back at me.

I heard that you will marry him…

Does his touch feel better than mine?

Does his kiss taste better than mine?

Or are they the same?

Almost the same?

Since he is my brother…

Ahhh… yes, because he was the first one who taught you how to lie in bed…

I raised one hand and gazed at my palm. Hollowed with the redness it was hours ago. It was the hardest I ever laid a hand on since I could remember. The palm that used to caress his bare chest left an indelible mark on his cheek. Not that my fingers will retain where it landed but it surely cut him way inside. Now I am regretting… I don’t want to regret what I did, but I am. I love him… still loving him…

I’m sorry.

I shouldn’t have let him dance with you.

Can I ask you that question now?

When I asked you before if you still love him, you said you’re not sure. But if you see him again, maybe you will know.

So, do you?

Do you still love my brother?

What was my answer? I can hardly remember despite my retentive memory. The words I spoke were unclear. Cut clear blurred.

~~~
The gathering left me with those empty bowls of popcorns and plastic wrappers of chips that lay silently on the table with one empty bottle of soda and half-full one. Cans of light beer scattered on the floor. I never complained because those were the remnant of another blissful occasion with the Reader’s Club who would usually hang out on my apartment some Saturday nights. I loved being with those young people as they made me feel young myself—but I’m not too old just a few years older than them.
The annoying sound of the doorbell made me leave that simple task. I hurriedly opened the door without taking a peek on who it was and was a bit surprised to find those curious pools with a slight smile on his lips, “mianeyo… I left my notebook…”
Oh,” I moved opening the door a little wider and gave him way, “come in.”
I followed his every movement as he searched for his lost item then raised the notebook with a smile, “found it…”
I just smiled without moving away from the closed door.
You got your hands pretty full here…” he commented as he scanned around the mess on my living room.
I don’t mind,” I smiled.
But I do,” he started picking up the trash and walking with ease on my little kitchen.
It’s okay, I can do it…” I tried to grab one of the bottles on his hand but he raised it higher where I can’t reach—he has that boyish smile that caught me off guard in that instance.
He is one of those that I’m not really familiar with. Something very mysterious because he hardly talks when we are having those meetings or get-togethers or even in class.
No…” he gave me those serious look that made me feel naked with all my clothes on.
II
That’s why you look so familiar! When I read your name on the list again it struck me. You were that handsome fellow who always tagged along on our dates!” I laughed as I handed him the glass bowl that he dried with much care. His hands working smoothly, inspecting every inch of the crystal… he was a pair of wondrous hands. I studied every movement… very refined, very gentle. That moment I wanted to be that crystal on his fingers. I bit my lips. I’m so into it again but the kid was attractive—yes, he was a kid. How many times do I have to remind myself of that? “How is he?”
Doing really well in my parents eyes…” he sneered, “like he always does.”
Wow… I smell angst,” I tried to divert my wandering thought off his fingers, “I thought you have a good relationship with him. He talked so much about you before, you know…”
He gave me another sarcastic grin then turned to me, “why did you break up?”
He went abroad. I never believed in long distance relationship—out of sight, out of mind, out of heart, something like that. But we’re still good friends now, sending e-mails once in a while.”
Did he try to push you not to break up with him?”
You know your brother,” I took the bowl from him since I felt like its going to melt if he continued rubbing it the way he did, “he said he loves me so much that he will do everything that could make me happy. And if being without him could make me that then so be it…”
It’s stupid.”
I know…” I let out a nervous laugh when he stared into my eyes as if trying to read my mind. I turned and was about to put my body on the counter to deposit the dishes on the cupboard but his hand touched my skin.
No—let me,” he was trying to lead me back down but I shook my head so he just handed each one and I did the task.
When it was all done I sat still on the counter as he was standing in front of me. “Why did you join the Reader’s Club? I mean, you don’t even participate in my class… and, and you were—are always staring blankly at me.”
Because I’m figuring out why my brother let you go…”
I opened my mouth to say something but there was nothing—no available thought for what he said. I shut my eyes tight and pretended to take it as a joke, “so? Have you figured it out?”
No…”
Oh…” I murmured.
All I know is that he is stupid. I am not.”
It all started from there. The first time I tasted him, his lips moved on mine urging me to submit to his demands —me on the countertop. The sand clock was turned then… our time started.
The next day I woke up with the kid on my bed.
I loved you when I was thirteen,” the kid confessed when I opened one eye. He was fully awake—fully naked, that kid on my bed.
Seven years ago… hmmm…” I tried to smile. What do couples usually talk about the next morning after they just did it? Maybe for normal couples, normal thoughts. But for us… “puppy love… that time I was having my puppy love too.”
My brother was your puppy love…” he said in a pensive look, “you were mine. I got to have you but you are his.”
Do you think you should be over it by now?” those confessions were overpowering then I put a hand on my aching head, “Why did I even give myself to you last night?”
Because you want me too. You’re just trying to evade that thought,” he pulled himself up in a sitting position.
Yeah right, Mr. Know-it-all,” I gathered myself and clutched the sheets on my body and hid my face on my palms, “damn it! Did I give myself away? Did I unconsciously send you that message?”
Hey, hey don’t get so psycho,” he laughed at my torment.
Oh my god! stop laughing!” I stood and hurried to the bathroom then turned to him before closing the door, “I… let’s pretend nothing happened. This is utter madness…”
Pretend? Are you kidding me?” I could hear him chuckling outside the door, “pretend that I did not just have the girl I wanted all my life?”
Shut up!” I shouted back as I struggled to get decent before going out.
When I read your name on the schedule, I signed up despite the fact that I’m not sure if it really was you.” he said as he followed me out of the bedroom, “then it was really you. “
You should be over that petty puppy crush,” I argued while pouring hot water on my mug, “do you want coffee? I don’t have milk,” he laughed at that. My mind was racing like hell.
I’m old enough to drink coffee, thank you very much.”
Okay, coffee…” I mumbled then looked down on my mug again, “can you please put something on first?”
Oh! okay.”
I leaned on the fridge and bump my head for a couple of times while cursing myself. He went out for a few minutes fully dressed and walked towards me, “no… you stay right there. Please, we can’t do this.”
Why not? I like you—no, I love you, and I know you want me too though we know how crazy it is.”
Why? First, I am four years older than you. Second, I am your Lit professor. And lastly, your brother is my ex-boyfriend! So yeah, you can call it absolutely crazy!”
Then you want to just forget what happened last—“
Don’t remind me… yeah, let’s forget about it,” I waved my hand in the air and fell on the chair, “…please.”
Can you? Can you forget about it?” He sat in front of me sipping his coffee, “because me, I can’t…” his puppy eyes stared at me.
I adored him. I doted on him. I was crazy over him. He was the brother I never had. He was the friend I don’t have. He was my lover. He was my baby boy.
The sand clock was slowly pouring down…
III
I sat on the side of the bed and gazed at that body that occupied my dreaming haven. It has been months after that and most of the nights I shared that bed with him—I finally gave in, he was irresistible and he knew when to use his charms. I traced my fingers on his clothed chest and slowly played on each little buttons to finally expose the sculptured skin. He was so young to have that kind of body, but I love it.
Gently, I bended down and inhaled his musky fragrance—far from the normal baby scent, but I loved it especially when he would come after his dance rehearsals… my baby sweat on his clothes again. I smiled to myself for being that impish and withdrew my face on his chest.
If you want to do something, do it,” he said without opening an eye, “it’s my pleasure to be sneaked by you…”
My baby is fully awake and…” I finally laid my lips on the side of his “and wants to be sneaked… but I want that kind of thrill… I can’t sneak up on you if you’re awake…” I laid a finger on his lips, “and so I’ll stop just… right… here…”
Okay,” he mumbled with a lazy smile, “I’ll pretend to sleep… you sneak on me again if it’ll make you feel great…”
Yes… okay…” I laid myself on the side and soothed his chest with one palm as my other hand balanced my body beside him. “I like… I like…” I chanted while planting idle kisses on his skin.
Do you think a sleeping person won’t wake up with all those noise your making?” his chest moved up and down as he chuckled.
Hey! You’re supposed to be sleeping!” I hit him lightly on the cheek. “okay… I won’t make a sound,” I uttered while trailing my fingers lower and lower until he grabbed my hand before it rested onto that something.
Not yet,” he grabbed my waist with his other hand and kneaded me on the bed, “let me…” he took my defenses down and did the sneaking himself.
IV
I’m going to marry you,” he said one day over a cup of coffee and a bowl of cereals.
Yes, baby… but get you’re diploma from kindergarten first, okay?” I winked at him.
Okay,” he stuffed his mouth with a nod, “but I’m serious.”
I’m serious too,” I gave him that look then reached out to brush some milk on the side of his lips then raised my hand, “I’m going to wear your ring here.”
Yes, you will,” he nodded again. “Four more years.”
Four more years.
V
I sat across the man I loved seven years ago. He has that same ready smile that captivated me before—accommodating, loving and caring, very gentle. So much the opposite of the other one. While he babied me, the other one, I pampered. It made me wonder why I chose the later.
I waited for you last night,” he smiled sipping his coffee.
I’m sorry, I have to do something the last minute,” I bit my lips hoping I convinced him.
You are like my brother,” he chuckled, I felt queasy, “he left very early and when I called him he told me he was on a friend’s house…”
He told me not to get you pregnant yet. His words echoed on my mind as the little mice raced inside my chest.
I was planning to run away with him and get drunk somewhere, but he said he needs to meet someone...” he chuckled, “I miss that kid…”
He misses you too…” I absentmindedly said.
What? Oh yeah, he told me you are his Lit professor…”
I nervously nodded, “yeah, but I just guessed that…”
Well, I hope I can get into his world again. I mean, he’s kinda detached.”
I admire you so much, oppa,” I smiled at him because I mean the words that were coming out, “how you love him sacrificing your own happiness. You wanted so much to run away after graduating from University but you don’t want to burden him with the responsibilities to your family…”
Well, he is my brother. I don’t want him to experience the same suffering I have had…” he stirred his drink, “but there’s only one thing that I regret…”
My heart leaped because I know what he was about to say.
“… I had to let you go…”
Oppa, I—“
It’s okay,” he smiled in assurance, “I don’t expect you to wait for me for seven years… so, is there someone?”
Y—yes,” I could have told him who it was but I got scared, “I… he—“
I hope to meet him one day…” he relaxed on his seat but I was fidgeting, “I can tell that you love him so much.”
Am I that transparent? “Yes, I do…”
Are you talking bout marriage?”
Wherever his questions were leading, that I can only wonder, “yes, but we’re both not ready for that…”
Really?” he dabbed the side of his lips.
How about you?” I have to keep the discussion away from that topic, “are you seeing someone now?”
Hmmm… that’s a hard question,” he chuckled, “I still need to move on…”
Oppa—“
No, I’m just kidding,” he looked away then continued, “actually, one reason I came back is to see if I still have that place but then, since—“
Oppa, you will always be special to me,” I felt sad and guilty.
I know that,” he smiled, “I once told you before, I loved you like a sister. I still can now. Whatever that makes you happy…”
That was their difference that mattered, while the older one was a martyr, the younger was a hero. He wanted to make me happy so he’s letting me go; the other knows he could make me happy so he never wanted to let me go. Tough decision. I lived it.
VI
He placed the jap-chae in front of me and I gave him a thumb’s up after smelling heaven. He sat across me and I put his bowl of rice closer, “the new student is really pretty, right?”
I have a new classmate?” he asked while chewing a mouthful of buchimge, “I didn’t notice…”
I glared at him, “don’t give me that. She’s like the talk of your entire department. I must say, I’m very impressed myself,” I stood and took the chilly sesame sauce from the fridge and poured a spoonful on his food, “she’s very intelligent.”
He continued eating silently as I went on with the girl’s credentials but I bit my tongue when he cut me.
Do you want me to date her?”
Date her?” I could sense the tension from the way he held his chopsticks, “I didn’t say anything, I just—“
Why do you keep on doing this?!” his voice grew louder, “why do you keep on making me feel that you are pushing me away? Do you think I will stop this just because you want to? I’m not him, damn it!?!”
This conversation has nothing to do with him so don’t put him in!” I watched his glare.
So you’re defending him now! Are you planning to push me away now that he’s back?”
That’s bullshit!!! Is that the me you know after all this time?”
D@mn it! Just answer me! Do you still love him?!”
Do I still love him? Oh come on, who am I having this conversation with right now? And who the hell am I sleeping with almost every night?!”
Shut the fukc up!” he stood and banged the table.
You shut the fukc up!” my chopstick flew in the air like it has a life of its own when I could not think of where to put that anger. My feet sprinted towards him when he gasped in pain, “oh baby… I’m sorry… let me see… please…” I pleaded as I tried to take his hands off his bleeding temple but he pushed me real hard that I fell on my bottom. The impact wasn’t so painful but my tears suddenly fell uncontrollably.
I hugged myself and cried on my own pain. I hated those times that we would be shouting and cursing and hurting each other. Those kinds of fights did happen for all the same reasons: the mention of his brother, the girls that buzzed around him, and every wrong reason in our relationship.
I’m sorry…”
It wasn’t me. It was him as he took me in his arms and squeezed me tight in to him, “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said those…”
No… no…,” I shook my head and tried to stop those annoying tears from flowing. That was the moment I felt like I’m the baby—his baby. I straightened and inspected his cut, “we need something to put on it…”
It’s okay…” he brushed my tears as I wiped the red droplets with my own shirt, “I love you, pabooyah…”
I shook my head and kissed him lightly on the lips, “I love you. Next time please dodge…”
He laughed and kissed me back, “that was bull’s eye. Good thing you haven’t tried it on your students…”
Actually, I tested it on you,” I giggled as the spicy taste of the sauce teased my tongue from his mouth.
What am I going to tell my mom about this cut?” he murmured when his lips moved an inch away from mine, “I shouted at my professor so she—“
Threw a chopstick on you,” I supplied then took his lips again.
Hmmmm… would they believe me?” I could feel his hands inside my shirt clutching inside making me unbelievably stiff.
But that’s the truth,” I tried to breathe in between words.
Yeah,” he struggled to continue since I could not stop myself from ravaging his lips, “and… and I’ll tell them you kissed me afterwards to… stop me… stop me… from crying… and… and… heck! We should stop talking right now…”
And who’s talking too much?” I laid myself on him—on the kitchen floor.
VII
I shook my head and turned the faucet on. If only the water could wash away all those that happened in the past years then I would get my retribution. The cold water teased my face even more as I continued to rub it as hard as I could hoping it could also clean the pain I was feeling inside. Then suddenly, my chest hurt... I felt like I was suffocated... the air seemed to get trapped inside and wouldn't want to go out. I heard my voice shrilled through the silence of the night as it joined the downpour of water from the open faucet.
I clutched my chest and bit my lips. I don't want to cry. My body helplessly slipped on the ground. That was when I realized I was breaking down.
I cried.
I tasted my salty tears falling down my face no matter how I tried to push them away with my palms but they wouldn't stop from flowing. I could hear my voice as I cried out loud. The pain was too real, the kind I never thought I would be feeling after all these years.
For the past years I left, it was just now that I regret. I regret being weak, I regret being coward, I regret being me.
Someone started a malicious issue about me-- I was keeping a young lover. Although it was true but we were good in hiding that nobody ever learned who he was. My career was at risk, so was his education. He tried to convince me it was okay and the issue would just die down as fast as it started. I got scared.
My parents learned about it and even his brother, but I denied and I felt bad denying the man I love but I could not help it. I was called by the school management and I denied. Everybody believed me but I could not risk everything so I decided to just leave. It was a hard decision and even the thought of telling him was harder.
I have seen him struggle with his education. I have seen him struggle to get his parents' approval. I have seen him struggle to free himself from his brother's shadow. I have seen him struggle to be himself.
And I don't want to risk everything that he still has.
I decided to leave.
Somewhere far, somewhere he could not find.
VIII
I was reading some notes to be discussed for my first class the next morning when the door opened and he walked in. He grinned at me like a little boy who just did some mischief as he slumped on the floor beside me and laid himself on my lap.
The pen slipped on my finger when his hand took mine and rested it on his chest.
They're making a contest on who could find your lover...” he started with a grin.
What's the prize?” I kidded though inside me it felt like a bad joke.
I want to punch them one by one.”
His face turned serious so I slowly took the pillow on the sofa and placed it under his head and lied down beside him-- both of us facing the ceiling. “Don't mind them.”
I could not help it...”
Baby...” I turned to him but he just stared ahead so I looked back again, “how was dinner?”
Same.”
So you're going to sleep here?”
He would meet his family every week and if things turned sour, he would spend the night with me and even the rest of the weekend until he would feel better.
You don't want?” he finally turned to me.
Hmmmm...” I pursed my lips and he glared at me so I moved closer and planted a kiss on the side of his ear, “I would love that...”
He gave me a big grin, “so what's our plan for tonight?”
I've got a couple of movies you would love...” I said and I started to get up but I felt his grip on my arm.
Let's not break up, okay?”
It was so random.
Maybe we knew each other so much that we felt each other's feelings and even thoughts. That was the moment I was ironing my plan.
At first, I considered it to be a sign to give up the thought of leaving but a week after that my parents heard about the rumor and forced me to marry someone they chose.
So I ran away.
I ran away without anybody knowing.
Only his brother because he was my friend aside from everything else. He was the one who arranged for my migration and for everything I needed. I owe him my life.
XI
My eyes hurt from too much crying as I made my way into the kitchen. The glass almost slipped off my fingers since I felt weak even to hold on to anything but I managed to pour some water and took a sip.
He asked me to marry him since it would be the best way out of my problem but I said that I couldn't and told him the truth about my affair with his brother. The pain on his eyes was engraved on my heart because he felt betrayed but I could not do anything.
I was still thankful because he stayed on with me until I decided to finally go back home. I thought I was ready and brave enough to face those I left.
I know it was hard for him but there was never a day that I didn't asked about him and he was good enough to understand. I was still in touch with the man I love even though we were a thousand miles away from each other.
Out of sight, out of mind, out of heart. I swallowed it all, because I still love him.
Deep inside, I could feel his brother's unfailing love for me too but he never showed it. I know it was selfish of me to hold on to his younger brother but maybe I fell too hard that there was no cure.
Crazy but I found myself smiling despite the traces of tears on my face. How my baby boy has grown! He looked so suave and manly on his white suit. He looked like an angel but the fierceness of his eyes scared me.
It was the anniversary of their company and my first day back home when his brother asked me to go with him. I did not say no because it would be the perfect time to see him again. Knowing him, he would keep his cool and face me as calmly as he could. It was a perfect time for me to explain myself without the tantrums he would often throw on me. It was a perfect time since so far I have learned how mature he has become.
It was a lovely evening, the music and the laughter said it all. Because we arrived together, those who knew about our past made a joke of us making it all public and a silent declaration of our engagement. They were all joke and we both rode on it besides we know those people and our crowd were not the serious bunch.
But I never considered those ears who were not welcome to hear that kind of joke.
I thought everything was okay when he met me civilly and even whispered on my ear how lovely I became all those years he was not in my life. That simple statement was simply nothing but it appeared to me as a statement that I was forgotten and I became part of the past.
Because of that I decided to avoid him since it was a painful thought that I wanted to leave if not for his brother who kept me there and lead me to the dance floor for a final dance.
My heart almost faltered when he walked up to us and asked for my hand that the older one willingly gave away without hesitations. He trusted him too much.
I'm sorry...”
What for?”
I wasn't able to say goodbye to you...”
Does it matter?”
Please don't say that...”
Okay, I'm sorry. It's all in the past now...”
Ye...yeah... I see you're doing good.”
Finally.”
I want to tell you everything.”
Okay, tell me now.”
Not here, I mean. This is not the right place.”
Would the place matter to you?”
S--”
I heard that you will marry him… is that why you can't say it here?”
You're mis--”
Does his touch feel better than mine?”
What?”
Does his kiss taste better than mine?”
What are you talking about?”
Or are they the same? Almost the same? Since he is my brother…”
Will you stop?!”
Ahhh… yes, because he was the first one who taught you how to lie in bed…”
The crashing of the glass as it met the floor startled me back to where I was and my tears fell again. I cried louder. I hated the feeling. I hated what happened but I could not hate him... my heart wouldn't let me hate him.
I started collecting what was spread on the floor amidst the trembling of my fingers and deposited them on the bin beside me. I squatted on the floor and embraced myself-- embraced my pain.
Suddenly, the glimmering by the side on the bin caught my eyes. What could be more painful? Emotional or physical pain?
I held on to that piece and weakly neared it to my pulse. My heart was raising and the voices on my head wouldn't stop until I felt the pang of pain crawling from my skin and the liquid dropped on my dress.
I felt weak, my vision blurred.
Nothing seemed clear except for that voice and that scent that made me want to drift back to consciousness...
Don't sleep! Please don't sleep! Hang on! I love you, pabooyah! Don't you dare leave me again!”
